Fear and groupthink are distorting your risk assessments

Firms invest heavily in scoring models, regulatory alignment and workflow design for their financial crime risk assessments. Yet the most influential variable in these exercises is rarely the methodology. It is the people completing them.

According to Arctic Intelligence, contributors seldom judge risk with complete objectivity. Their assessments are filtered through fear, pride, internal pressure, optimism, self-preservation and the norms of the group around them.

These forces shape how risk is perceived, how readily weaknesses are disclosed and how candidly control performance is described. Left unmanaged, they can distort even the most rigorous framework. Once recognised and addressed, they can make assessments far more truthful and dependable.

Fear of exposure is arguably the most damaging influence. Many contributors worry that admitting a weakness will draw scrutiny, attract regulators, reflect badly on their leadership or invite criticism of their team.

Concerns about audit intervention or being linked to operational failures can push people to soften inherent risk ratings, inflate control effectiveness and offer vague or selective explanations. Where psychological safety is lacking, the assessment can turn into an act of self-defence rather than an honest diagnosis, leaving the organisation with a misleading view of its exposures.

Optimism bias compounds the problem. Many teams sincerely believe they outperform their peers, that their controls are dependable and that past success guarantees future resilience.

Exceptions are dismissed as one-offs rather than warning signs of systemic weakness. The bias is unintentional, a natural mental shortcut, but it routinely leads firms to overrate preventative, detective and corrective controls, producing reassuring outputs that misrepresent real exposure.
