A 1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia that was never meant to look like a Giulia at all is now up for grabs in the UK. It was rebuilt decades ago into a lightweight alloy race car nicknamed the "Red Submarine."
The one-off, built from a 1300GT after accident damage, packs a reworked 180 horsepower twin-cam engine and a Kamm-style tail. It's road legal despite its track-day looks.
According to Car & Classic, this single example started life as a standard 1300GT before an early accident led to a full rebody in lightweight aluminum. Whoever did the work gave it a fastback shape with a Kamm-style tail, chasing lower drag.
The 1967 Giulia arrived as a genuinely advanced sports sedan for its era, and the broader Giulia family went on to rack up real motorsport wins through the 1960s.
This particular car, though, is not a factory effort. It's a privately reworked special that just happens to wear the same badge.
The current owner bought the car in Belgium roughly a decade ago and chose to race and refine it rather than restore it to original spec. That decade of development is why it now presents as a finished, track-focused machine.
It has since been imported and registered on UK plates, and the seller states the car is exempt from MOT testing and vehicle tax based on its age and status as a historic vehicle. UK law ties MOT and tax exemption for older vehicles to how the car is classified, and to whether it counts as a substantially modified vehicle of historic interest.
