Volkswagen tells ID.4 owners to limit charging to 80% as part of a recall, or it will do it for them

Volkswagen told certain ID.4 drivers to limit charging to 80% as part of a recall by October 21. Unless drivers opt out, VW will automatically “apply a temporary vehicle setting” remotely.

Earlier this month, Volkswagen issued a recall impacting 22,524 ID.4 electric SUVs model years 2023 to 2026.

In a letter sent to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on October 6, Volkswagen urged owners to only charge their vehicles to a maximum of 80% battery capacity until a fix is ready.

Although the root cause is still unknown, Volkswagen said that “certain charging profiles combined with a state of charge over 80% may trigger thermal propagation,” or a fire within the battery.

In an email sent to owners with vehicles included in the recall, Volkswagen said that unless they opt out by October 21, it “intends to apply a temporary vehicle setting that limits charging to 80%.” The update will be done remotely and reflected in the mobile app on or about October 27, 2026.

You can accept or decline the change in the myVW app by selecting Accept Setting or Decline Setting by October 21. It will be shown as a 93EX High-Voltage Battery Settings notification.

Several ID.4 owners are already receiving the update. The recall follows a field study as part of an ongoing review of Volkswagen vehicles not included in previous battery recalls.

Volkswagen Group’s Product Safety Committee requested “additional clarifications” from the battery cell supplier, SK Battery America, about production and a potential clean date.
