Volkswagen is recalling 49,958 Tiguans from the 2025 model year over a software fault that can reset the body control module (BCM) and, in the worst case, shut off the engine while driving. The automaker reported the campaign to safety regulators on September 10, 2026.
The fix is a free dealer software update, and owners do not need to wait for a letter to find out if their SUV is included. Checking the vehicle's 17-character VIN through the federal recall lookup tool confirms coverage right now.
Recall 26V587 targets Tiguans built between March 24 and August 30, 2025, according to the production window cited in the report. Public recall documents describe a software error in the body control module that can cause a reset leading to an engine stall and loss of certain functions.
The filings list 49,958 affected vehicles in the United States and show Volkswagen reporting the defect and recall to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on September 10, 2026. They do not provide a detailed internal timeline for when engineers first observed the behavior or pinned down the root cause.
Regulators note that a reset can shut off the engine and disable key systems while the vehicle is in motion, which creates an increased risk of a crash. The public materials focus on the safety risk and remedy, not on how many incidents occurred in specific markets or during particular months.
This is not the Tiguan 's only open campaign. The 2025 model year also carries recall 25V854, tied to a December 10, 2025 manufacturer report date, for 3,138 vehicles over a passenger airbag issue, plus an August 13, 2025 action covering just 15 vehicles with a loose tie rod bolt, a pattern of smaller fixes that follows similar Volkswagen Jetta recall campaigns earlier this year.
