Volkswagen is recalling ‘several thousand’ EVs, including the ID.4, and not just in the US

Volkswagen is set to recall “several thousand” electric vehicles, including the ID.4 and ID. Buzz. The company is urging owners to limit charging to 80% until a fix is available.

After recalling close to 100,000 electric vehicles globally earlier this year, Volkswagen is preparing for another major recall.

A company spokesperson told the German newspaper Handelsblatt that “several thousand” Volkswagen EVs are affected.

The recall follows an internal quality check that found some high-voltage battery cells do not meet quality requirements. According to the report, the affected models include the ID.3, ID.4, ID.7, and ID. Buzz, plus the Cupra Born, produced between 2023 and 2026.

Volkswagen already issued a recall with the NHTSA earlier this month, affecting 22,524 ID.4 SUVs for model years 2023 to 2026.

Until a fix is available, the company is urging owners to limit charging to 80% battery capacity. The root cause is still unknown, but VW said charging the high-voltage battery to over 80% in certain models could trigger “thermal propagation,” or a fire within the battery.

The company said the recall follows another field study as part of an ongoing review of Volkswagen vehicles not included in previous battery recall campaigns.

Volkswagen Group’s Product Safety Committee has requested “additional clarifications” from battery cell supplier SK Battery America about specific production dates and a potential clean date.

In the US, Volkswagen said it had received 22 claims between January 18, 2024, and August 07, 2026.

Volkswagen is still working on a remedy. Notification letters warning owners of the safety risks are expected to be mailed out on November 27, 2026.
