Hyundai Recalls 95,000 Cars, Tells Owners to Park Outside amid Fire Risk

The recall covers a subset of Hyundai Genesis models as well as a group of Genesis G80 sedans.

Hyundai is recalling certain 2015–2016 Hyundai Genesis sedans and 2017–2020 Genesis G80 sedans, documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show. The recall, which covers a total of 94,622 cars, is accompanied by a “Park Outside” warning, as the impacted cars pose a fire risk. Fortunately, only 1 percent of the recalled population is estimated to pose a danger.

According to the NHTSA documents, the recall issue stems from a power seat control, which could overheat. Specifically, the seat slider and height adjustment lever on non-memory powered front seats can become dislodged or damaged when hit with an external force. It’s possible that the damaged control can become locked in the engaged position, causing it to operate continuously. The NHTSA paperwork shows that if the power seat control is left on for too long, the motor can overheat, potentially leading to a fire.

Based on the recall documents, owners may be warned of the issue through one of two identifiers. For starters, the power seat controls may simply stop working, which could indicate that the control has been damaged. Alternatively, owners may notice a burning odor in the cabin, which should alert them to the issue.

Unfortunately, Hyundai is still working on developing a remedy for the seat control issue. The automaker is urging customers to park their vehicle outside and away from other cars and structures until a permanent fix has been developed and performed.
