Italy has placed the first sizeable military order for the Ineos Grenadier from any NATO member, the automaker confirmed this week. Austria's government has signed a separate deal for an armored variant of the same off-roader.
The two contracts mark the Grenadier's debut with sovereign armed forces after years of civilian and specialist law-enforcement use. A trial in the United Kingdom could add a third buyer, though that process is far from decided.
Ineos Automotive said the Italian Army has selected the Grenadier for a new military fleet, calling Italy the first NATO country to place a substantial order for the truck. The automaker has not disclosed how many vehicles are involved or what the contract is worth.
Deliveries to Italy run through ATflow, Ineos Automotive's regional distributor, which is set to begin handing over vehicles to the Italian Army in early 2027. That timeline suggests the Grenadier still needs to clear whatever final adaptation and acceptance steps the Army requires before trucks reach units.
Austria took a different path. Its government tender went to Valentin Tusch GmbH, a specialist in vehicle armoring and conversion work, which will supply Grenadiers adapted for enhanced protection to the country's defense and interior-security forces. The first Austrian deliveries and trials start before the end of 2026, ahead of Italy's rollout.
Mike Whittington, chief commercial officer at Ineos Automotive, said the deals provide validation beyond the two contracts themselves. "Our most recent military agreements signal a huge vote of confidence in Grenadier as a benchmark already, as talks with other nations' defence procurement teams continue," he said.
