Stop me if you've heard this one before: Tesla may be ready to put the long-delayed Roadster back in the spotlight. The electric automaker announced it will livestream an event on X this Thursday evening, offering another chance to see one of the most elusive cars in its lineup.
The story began in 2017, when Tesla unveiled a second-generation Roadster with eye-watering performance claims. Nearly nine years later, the production car still hasn't arrived, making the upcoming presentation a potentially important moment for a project that has spent most of its life stuck in limbo. Tesla originally planned to start building the Roadster in 2020. That deadline came and went, followed by several more postponements.
The company has continued to tease the electric sports car over the years, but customers who placed reservations have yet to take delivery of a production model. This latest event should offer a clearer picture of what Tesla actually intends to build, although another presentation alone won't bring the car any closer to customers' garages.
The stakes are high because Elon Musk has made some extraordinary claims about the tri-motor, four-seater Roadster and its removable roof. 9 seconds, and a highway driving range of 620 miles from a 200-kWh battery. Those figures would make the Roadster an exceptionally quick electric car, even by today's standards, but Tesla has yet to demonstrate that a production version can deliver on those promises.
