Skyworks begins sampling its Si829x gate driver for EV traction inverters

Skyworks Solutions has moved its Si829x isolated safety gate driver for EV traction inverters from development to pre-production release, and samples are available for customer evaluation and advanced prototyping.

Skyworks says the gate driver, which it unveiled in June, has completed AEC-Q100 automotive qualification.

Technical documentation, available under NDA, includes a datasheet, technical reference manual, functional safety manual and application notes. Skyworks has also released two evaluation board kits, companion GUI software and complex device driver (CDD) software.

The Si829x supports both SiC FETs and IGBTs and uses ProVCD, Skyworks’ second-generation variable current drive, instead of conventional voltage-mode gate drive. Skyworks says that in its own testing, ProVCD reduced switching losses by up to 44% compared with voltage-mode gate drive.

“Si829x gives customers a qualified path from evaluation to advanced prototypes,” said Mario Battello, Vice President of Product Line Management at Skyworks. “The ProVCD platform combines software-configurable performance with the safety, isolation and design flexibility needed to standardize inverter designs for EVs, eVTOL, and eAgriculture, and accelerate development for high power motor applications like datacenter cooling and AI power supplies.”
