Rivian and Redwood Materials are expanding their existing partnership. In addition to providing stationary battery storage, Redwood will play a larger role in the future on behalf of Rivian in recycling production waste and reusing decommissioned EV batteries.
Rivian has confidently stated that the partnership will establish Redwood as one of its “key partners to enabling end-to-end energy solutions”. Specifically, Redwood will collect end-of-life EV battery packs from Rivian via the company’s nationwide network of service centres and then “[evaluate] each battery pack to determine whether to repurpose it for energy storage – deployed directly at Rivian’s manufacturing facilities or at other locations – or to recycle it,” as explained in an accompanying announcement.
Redwood will also recycle battery waste generated during Rivian’s production processes. This expanded scope of the partnership builds on an existing collaboration announced in April 2026, which initially focused on a specific project: the construction of 10 MWh of battery storage capacity using unused Rivian battery packs at the EV manufacturer’s production plant in Normal.
The background is that Redwood shifted its strategic focus in 2025. Since then, while the company has continued to operate as a battery recycler for the recovery of critical raw materials such as cobalt, nickel, copper and lithium, it has increasingly invested in the development and construction of stationary battery storage systems.
