It’s Happening: Porsche Is Developing A Mid-Engined Hypercar

Update: Porsche has dropped a teaser video of the Mission S concept ahead of its October 15 reveal.

Back in March, Porsche gave us something to get excited about. The company said it was considering a new sports car positioned above the 911, opening the door to a successor for the 918 Spyder and potentially bringing Zuffenhausen back into the hypercar game. At the time, however, it was only an idea. Porsche was evaluating GT and hypercar concepts, and nothing was guaranteed to make it into production.

Fast-forward to October, and the story has become considerably more interesting. During its 2026 Capital Markets Day, Porsche confirmed that it is working on a “mid-engined super sports car platform that will enable a model line that sits above the iconic 911 sports car.” In other words, this isn't merely Zuffenhausen throwing another concept into a conference presentation.

The company is laying the groundwork for an entirely new family of flagship sports cars, with “model line” suggesting there could be more than just one vehicle. We can already imagine a coupe being joined by a roadster and other derivatives to achieve economies of scale, but it’s too early for Porsche to talk about all of them.

Although technical specifications remain under wraps, we can deduce from the mid-engined layout that it won’t be a 911 on steroids. Instead, it’ll have a dedicated platform with a combustion engine, rather than the purely electric powertrain proposed by the 2023 Mission X concept pictured here. That’s a wise move, considering electric hypercars haven’t been selling all that well, as one-percenters still crave combustion engines; the bigger, the better.
