Global leaders flag critical minerals, battery technology & domestic manufacturing as key to strengthening India’s EV supply chain.
New Delhi, October 2026 – India’s push to strengthen domestic battery manufacturing is bringing critical mineral supplies, technology partnerships and supply chain resilience into focus, with potential implications for the country’s electric vehicle (EV) industry.
At the Renewable Energy India (REI) Expo & The Battery Show India (TBSI) on 23 October, industry leaders highlighted opportunities to combine India’s manufacturing capabilities with international expertise in battery technology, energy storage and critical minerals. The discussions also pointed to the importance of building domestic capabilities as India expands its clean energy infrastructure.
For the automotive industry, access to battery technologies and critical minerals remains an important consideration as manufacturers develop electric mobility solutions. Australia, which has significant lithium, cobalt and rare earth resources, identified battery manufacturing and EVs as key areas for cooperation with India.
Philip Green, Australia’s High Commissioner to India, said “The two countries could combine Australia’s engineering expertise and mineral resources with India’s manufacturing strength and integration into global supply chains.”
“Australia produces more than 50 percent of the world’s lithium, according to Green, and holds the world’s second-largest cobalt reserves. It also ranks second or third globally in rare earth resources.” he said.
These resources could support collaboration in battery manufacturing and EV supply chains. Australia has 20 companies and 32 exhibitors participating in the expo, showcasing technologies across energy storage, grid infrastructure, green hydrogen and renewable energy integration.
