Next-generation CR-Vs will enter production three months late, but they’ll eventually take over the Civic’s spot in Honda’s Indiana plant.
The Honda CR-V is getting a major redesign for 2028, but the automaker is reportedly pushing back the start of production to make more 2027 models first. Though the delayed start date means lower output of the new CR-V in the first year, Honda is clearing space for increased production in the near future, according to a report from Automotive News.
The CR-V is Honda’s most popular nameplate in the United States, making up 9.5 percent of Honda’s total U.S. sales through September this year. The Civic comes in second place, but Honda is prioritizing U.S. production of the redesigned compact SUV over its economy car in 2028.

Last year, Honda shifted a lot of its CR-V production from Canada to the United States to lower the impact of import tariffs. U.S.-market CR-Vs are now primarily built in East Liberty, Ohio, and Greensburg, Indiana. The current-generation CR-Vs are in high demand, so Honda is reportedly pushing production of the redesigned hybrid-only CR-V to April 2027 to give this year’s model a bit more production time.
7 percent decrease in its monthly output of the redesigned model in its first year. However, that reduction will be followed by a huge production increase. The AN report says Honda is canceling its original plans to build the next-gen Civic at its Indiana plant beginning in May 2028, which gives the CR-V plenty of breathing room once the Civic moves out.
