E.ON Next cuts overnight EV charging rate to 6.5p/kWh

E.On Next has reduced overnight charging rates on its Next Drive Smart tariff from £0.08 / kWh to £0.065p / kWh. The energy supplier claims it is the lowest off-peak rate currently available on the British market.

The new price took effect on 27 October and provides a lower daily charging rate between midnight and 6AM. It applies to a household’s entire electricity consumption, not just EV charging. Customers can therefore also run appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers during the cheaper period.

Next Drive Smart requires a compatible EV and charger, as well as a smart meter capable of providing half-hourly readings. Customers must use the E.ON Next Home app to schedule smart charging. Electricity used outside the qualifying off-peak periods, or through the app’s boost function can be charged at the standard daytime rate, currently 34.0p / kWh.

E.ON Next has also cut the off-peak rate on its Next Drive Fixed tariff, from 9p to 8.5p / kWh. Unlike the Smart tariff, the Fixed option locks in its off-peak rate from 12 months. However, both tariffs have no exit fees. E.ON Next states that drivers could save an average of £476 per year with Next Drive Smart or £428 with Next Drive Fixed, compared with charging at the current energy price cap. This is based on estimates assuming annual driving of 8000 miles and an average efficiency of 3.33 miles per kWh.

ON Next is enabling EV drivers with a home charger to access low-cost charging at home.
