Starting in 2027, BMW aims to expand its Level 2 assistant to urban traffic. For the first time, the system will also provide autonomous support during turning, in roundabouts, and at priority intersections. However, the driver must remain attentive and ready to intervene at all times. Pricing for the new features has not yet been announced.
BMW is bringing SAE Level 2 partially automated driving to urban environments. Starting in 2027, the Munich-based automaker will roll out new navigation-guided assist functions that cover the entire spectrum, from motorways and rural roads to city centres. The launch will begin in Germany, with other countries to follow gradually.
This expansion is made possible by integrating the system with BMW Maps’ route guidance. While the City Assistant already automates stopping and restarting at traffic lights, the technology will handle significantly more complex manoeuvres in urban traffic from 2027. With active destination guidance, the vehicle will independently position itself on multi-lane roads, make turns, and navigate roundabouts. Priority situations at intersections will also be detected and processed by the sensor system.
The legal requirements for Level 2 systems remain a prerequisite. The assist functions will operate only as long as an in-cabin camera detects an attentive person at the wheel. The basis for this is the Europe-wide provisions of UN Regulation No. 171 (DCAS Series 02). From 2027, these regulations will, for the first time, permit assist systems to autonomously suggest and initiate driving manoeuvres in urban traffic. An independent technical service has already successfully completed the required real-world road tests.
