Eka Mobility plans ₹1,000 cr push into electric CV research

Eka Mobility is expanding its electric commercial vehicle push with a five-year R&D plan worth about ₹1,000 crore and a wider manufacturing ecosystem that the company says has crossed ₹3,500 crore in investment. The business, backed by Mitsui & Co. and VDL Groep, is also targeting exports as a meaningful share of sales volume.

Electric commercial vehicle maker Eka Mobility is deepening its bet on India-led engineering, with a fresh five-year research push and a manufacturing network designed to support buses, trucks and small commercial vehicles. According to auto.hindustantimes.com , the company is pairing product development with a broader industrial footprint that it says has already crossed ₹3,500 crore in investment.

The plan is not just about adding capacity. Eka Mobility is positioning itself as a technology-first electric CV player, with founder and chairman Sudhir Mehta saying the business intends to spend about ₹1,000 crore more on research and development over the next five years. The company said it has already deployed more than ₹600 crore in R&D, underlining how much of its capital is being directed towards engineering rather than only assembly lines.

Mehta framed the next phase as a long-term technology race rather than a short-term sales push. Speaking at a media interaction, he said the company has a broad 12 to 13 vehicle platform range and will continue investing in technology to stay ahead in e-mobility. His comments suggest that Eka Mobility wants to differentiate itself through in-house development in India, instead of relying mainly on imported know-how or outsourced design.
