BYD’s newest EV is about as big as a Toyota Camry, but brings a lot more tech for $23K

BYD launched the new Seal 07 in China, where it starts at around $23,000. It’s about the size of a Toyota Camry, but brings a surprising amount of tech and premium features for the money.

After introducing the updated first-generation Seal 07 in March, BYD launched the second-gen model on Thursday.

The second-generation Seal 07, which BYD calls the “new choice for a class-leading luxury experience,” is available in battery electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains.

BYD offers five variants, including two PHEVs and three EVs, starting at 139,900 yuan (about $21,000) for the plug-in hybrid and 149,900 yuan (around $22,500) for the fully electric version.

The new Seal 07 EV uses a 76.7 kWh second-generation BYD Blade LFP battery, providing a CLTC range of up to 481 miles (775 km).

It comes standard with a single rear-mounted electric motor producing up to 328 hp (245 kW) and 269 lb-ft (365 Nm) of torque, which BYD says enables it to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph (0 to 100 km/h) in 5.5 seconds.

All plug-in hybrid variants use BYD’s latest DM-i system, which features a 1.5L turbocharged engine with 154 hp (115 kW) and a 214 hp (160 kW) front electric motor.

The new Seal 07 PHEV has a smaller 37 kWh battery that provides up to 205 miles (330 km) of pure electric CLTC range. That’s a considerable jump from the 143 miles (230 km) of electric range the previous generation offered.

0 and Flash Charging technology, the vehicle’s battery can recharge from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes.
