India’s automotive testing ecosystem got a significant upgrade this week as ARAI broadened its infrastructure for electric mobility, safety validation and certification. The institute has added a new battery laboratory and an EV powertrain testing facility at a time when automakers are racing to localise critical technologies and meet tighter safety and export requirements.
Union minister for heavy industries and steel H D Kumaraswamy virtually inaugurated the new facilities during his visit to the institute on Friday. The announcement also came alongside a fresh push on crash testing, road safety outreach and industry collaboration, underlining how the research body is positioning itself as a larger hub for next-generation mobility development.
The new Advanced Battery Laboratory has been developed with an investment of about ₹55 crore, backed by the ministry and ARAI . Set up under the Ministry of Heavy Industries ’ Enhancement of Competitiveness in the Indian Capital Goods Sector Phase II scheme , the facility is meant to strengthen domestic capability in battery testing, validation and safety assessment.
Its scope covers electric and hybrid vehicle applications, including design validation, certification work and export-compliance testing against Indian and global standards.
