Acura Will Drop the MDX’s Type S Performance Trim After 2026

We don’t yet have details on the 2027 MDX, but Acura says it will be applying Type S ‘features and styling’ to the base V-6 model.

After Acura recently discontinued the TLX sedan, the ZDX electric SUV, and the manual-transmission version of the Integra, the brand’s lineup continues to shrink, as the MDX SUV’s top Type S trim level will disappear following the 2026 model year. An Acura spokesperson confirmed to Car and Driver that production of this higher-performance version of the mid-size luxury crossover will go on hiatus.

As reported by Automotive News, the decision was made due to uncertainty around the U.S. EPA’s new emissions regulations, which are set to take effect in 2027. The MDX Type S uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 that’s not currently found anywhere else in Honda or Acura’s lineup, while the standard MDX uses a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6.

In a statement, Acura said that it would offer some of the Type S model’s “features and styling” to the rest of the MDX lineup, which suggests that some changes are in store for the MDX soon. Acura has not yet released details on the 2027 MDX, but it says that more information is coming later this year. The current-generation MDX has been on the market since the 2022 model year, and the Type S variant was added when this generation debuted.

If you have your eye on an MDX Type S, there’s probably still time, as Acura says it expects to have inventory of 2026 MDX models for sale for a while.
