The legendary Japanese designer will be honored on Nov. 30 at London’s Royal Albert Hall for his influence on fashion and enduring creative legacy.
LONDON — Yohji Yamamoto, the legendary Japanese designer, will be honored with the Outstanding Achievement Award during this year’s Fashion Awards, slated for Nov. 30 at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
The event’s organizer, the British Fashion Council, said Wednesday that the award acknowledges Yamamoto’s contribution to the global fashion industry and his influence on generations of designers.
The BFC also cited his distinctive design language, masterful tailoring and radical reimagining of womenswear, as well as a practice grounded in innovation, craftsmanship and artistic integrity.
“Few designers have changed the way we think about clothes as profoundly as Yamamoto. His work has always challenged convention while remaining deeply rooted in craft, precision and an uncompromising creative vision,” said Laura Weir, chief executive officer of the British Fashion Council.
“For generations of people around the world, he has shown that fashion can be simultaneously intellectual, emotional and deeply human. It is a privilege to recognize his extraordinary contribution to our industry,” she added.
Yamamoto launched his label in Tokyo in 1972. His work has since crossed fashion, art and culture, extending beyond his namesake line to include Y-3, his collaboration with Adidas launched in 2003, and costume design for film and opera.
The Outstanding Achievement Award recognizes a British or international designer whose career has helped shape and redefine fashion through creativity, originality and innovation.
