THE WHAT? Walmart is preparing to raise approximately US$6.5 billion through US and Canadian bond offerings as the global retailer increases investment in store expansion, e-commerce and automation.
THE DETAILS The retailer has launched its first Canadian-dollar bond offering, valued at C$5 billion (US$3.55 billion), alongside a US$3 billion bond issuance. The fundraising comes as Walmart’s capital expenditure is projected to reach a record US$29 billion in 2027, supporting new stores, digital infrastructure and operational efficiency initiatives. The company also faces approximately US$3.3 billion in debt maturities next year. Investor demand for the US offering exceeded US$14 billion at its peak, while the Canadian issuance will allow Walmart to diversify its funding sources and broaden its investor base.
THE WHY? The financing highlights Walmart’s continued investment in physical and digital retail infrastructure as competition intensifies across consumer goods distribution. For cosmetics and personal care manufacturers, the expansion of Walmart’s retail network and e-commerce capabilities could create additional opportunities for brand visibility, product distribution and consumer engagement.
