UC Eyes More Capital, Burma Burma’s IPO & More

A year after listing, Urban Company is back in the market for more funds. The company plans to raise ₹2,500 Cr as it chases profitability, eyes new businesses and fights a costly battle for home services supremacy. Will the fresh capital fortify UC’s competitive posture?

A Bigger War Chest: Urban Company’s board has approved a proposal to raise up to ₹2,500 Cr through equity or convertible securities. While it is yet to decide on the route for the fundraise, the management believes that the proceeds would absorb short-term operational burn without constraining internal cash flows.

The ₹2,500 Cr Buffer: While the company maintains that it can reach EBITDA breakeven by FY28 without fresh capital, the fundraise provides balance sheet flexibility. Simultaneously, the capital buffer will also enable UC to fund new products, execute new acquisitions and expand internationally without compromising its core margins.

The InstaHelp Drag: The timing is significant. The company’s net loss more than tripled YoY to ₹182.5 Cr in Q2 FY27. Largely to blame for this was the loss from its quick service vertical, InstaHelp, and continued investments in the business. What has not helped is the intensifying competition from Snabbit and Pronto, which is forcing UC to spend heavily on user acquisition, retaining gig workers and market expansion.

The Native Expansion: Parallely, UC is also foraying into the residential AC market under its Native brand. The new venture will rely solely on the UC app for distribution, focusing its initial years on product feedback and calibrated capital allocation.
