Singapore Air Quality Drops into Unhealthy Range Ahead of Grand Prix

Singapore recorded 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index levels above 100 across all five regional districts on October 8, pushing air quality into the unhealthy zone.

Readings reached 159 in the west and 142 in central Singapore at 11am, testing contingency operations ahead of the October 9 to 11 Formula 1 night race.

Air quality measurements showed northern readings at 112, southern stations at 111, and eastern districts at 122. The 24-hour index evaluates six major air pollutants, with scores between 101 and 200 classified as unhealthy. Hourly PM2.5 concentrations, which track immediate fine particulate density, climbed to 67 in the west and 57 in central areas. Readings between 56 and 150 reflect elevated particulate concentrations.

Race organisers prepared operational safeguards as track sessions approached Marina Bay. Singapore GP developed response plans alongside government bodies to handle poor visibility and public health risks, including distributing N95 masks at circuit gates if air conditions deteriorate.

Track officials maintained that racing schedules remained unaffected. A Formula 1 spokesperson stated: “There is absolutely no risk to the event and the conditions where the event is taking place are not at any level of concern.”

National Environment Agency advisories directed healthy residents to cut back on prolonged or strenuous outdoor exercise during unhealthy index readings. Vulnerable groups, including children, pregnant women, and individuals with heart or respiratory conditions, received guidance to avoid heavy outdoor activity entirely.

Prolonged haze directly challenges foot traffic across open-air retail belts, outdoor dining precincts, and waterfront hospitality venues that rely on major sporting crowds.
