While the lion’s share of attention on New Balance lately has rightly been on its introduction of the 990v7, yet another new model is on the way and deserves not to slip under the radar.
The New Balance TL900 is brand-new sneaker inspired by trail walking, with a fitting arrival amid the early days of the approach shoe trend and with an aesthetic similar to the Allerdale.
An understated and moderately technical build sees the shoe given a rubber toe tip and heel stabilizer, while the rest of the upper is rendered in suede with panels added around the tongue and heel. A mesh lining offers a plush surrounding, and the material is also used for a tongue with embroidered “New Balance” text.
Additional Branding appears in the form of a small, raised “N” badge near the lateral toe, and the uppermost eyestay pair takes form of D-rings while all of the others are hidden. A cupsole then drops the foot into a system fully wrapped in rubber and with a modest amount of tread at the outsole.
For its debut, the TL900 features an upper primarily clad in “Linen” with “Wakame” green accents and a predominantly black sole unit.
The approach shoe trend has emerged over the course of the year as the latest extension of gorpcore’s reign in footwear, which has lasted longer than its run in apparel. Built with the purpose of tackling the hikes leading up to rock climbing routes, the qualifying models boast durability with rubberized toes and a generally muted sensibility that stands out from other louder sneaker trends.
