Microsoft's most affordable Surface PCs get a Snapdragon X2 speed boost

Microsoft has come to Qualcomm's Snapdragon Summit with much-needed updates to its lowest-priced Surface PCs. The new second edition Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch offerings should be meaningfully faster while delivering a few additional perks, and they're joined by a new take on the Surface Mouse.

Both new Surface models use the Snapdragon X2 Plus chip, which runs at a much higher clock speed than the X Plus in the first versions (1.7GHz versus 1.25GHz) and is better for on-device AI at up to 85 trillion operations per second (TOPS) versus 45 before. Microsoft touts "over 60%" faster graphics, efficiency that leads to "all-day" battery life (15.5 hours for the Pro, 22.5 hours for the Laptop), and up to 95 percent faster local AI processing.

Both have 25 percent brighter (500-nit) displays while the Pro adds Ink Canvas, a notetaking and sketching tool that uses AI to generate images and summaries. The software will come to other devices on the Pro's launch day, Microsoft says. If you buy the Surface Pro for Business, you have a 5G option to stay perpetually online.

The designs remain unchanged, with two USB-C ports on the Surface Laptop plus a legacy USB-A port on the Pro. Both have "AI-optimized" 1080p front cameras, plus an HD camera on the Pro's back.
