The Metropolitan Opera Opening Gala Stages ‘Macbeth’ for Katie Holmes, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Ariana Debose and More

The Metropolitan Opera kicked off its new season on Tuesday evening with a cocktail party and private dinner, sandwiching a performance of “Macbeth.”

Luckily for those in possession of a fur stole it was the first properly brisk day of fall. Tuxedo and ballgown-clad guests lined up outside of the Metropolitan Opera House promptly at 5:30 p.m., eager to have their photos taken and down a glass of Champagne before the performance.

Frances McDormand and Joel Coen were early birds, making a beeline to the bar to order martinis upon arrival. Patricia Clarkson was right behind her, beaming as she floated into the opera house.

“I’m trying to get rid of the tickets,” he said, tucking the envelope into his suit jacket before they posed for a photographer.

Other guests included Katie Holmes, Jason Bard Yarmosky, Julianna Margulies, Keith Lieberthal, Ariana DeBose, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Andrea Riseborough, Aja Naomi King, Kate Walsh, Margarita Levieva, Cory Michael Smith, Georgina Chapman and Cynthia Rowley.

“Sorry babe” Levieva said to her date as she peeled off to take a photo.

Photo moments were aplenty: a pair of guests draped themselves on a back staircase, snapping away on their phones, while one dedicated older gentleman got down on his knees to better capture his date.

“Is that Katie Holmes?” one opera fan gasped to another, as the actress and her boyfriend, artist Jason Bard Yarmosky, appeared out of an elevator on the upper level.

A few guests channeled the production of “Macbeth” with their own take on a ruff.
