The beauty brand's second fragrance, created with master perfumer Dominique Ropion, further establishes Merit as a multicategory lifestyle brand, according to its CEO.
Merit, the beauty brand founded by entrepreneur Katherine Power that is best known for makeup and skin care, is doubling down on its fragrance offering with New Wave L’extrait De Parfum.
Launching Oct. 22 direct-to-consumer and priced at $92, Merit’s second fragrance was created in collaboration with master perfumer Dominique Ropion, and his prodigy Meabh McCurtin.
Inspired by travel, nature and Surrealist art, New Wave is a solar fragrance centered around personal power, optimism and sensuality. It opens with pink pepper and angelica, moves into a heart of orange blossom and creamy ylang-ylang, and settles into a warm, musky base.
The scent is housed in a custom designed bottle inspired by Surrealist art, meant to evoke the gentle movement of a wave — a symbol of continuous motion and change.
“Some fragrances become references because their construction is so precise and enduring,” Ropion said. “With New Wave, I wanted to capture the spirit of classical amber compositions, such as Ambre 83, while reinterpreting them for today. The challenge was not to recreate the past, but to preserve its strength and sophistication in a fragrance that feels more radiant, and relevant to a modern audience.”
As for the business case for another fragrance, Merit chief executive officer Philippe Pinatel, spoke to the success of its first scent, Retrospect, which was also an extrait and debuted two years ago.
