The 22-year-old musician — and son of Will Ferrell — is in the midst of a breakout year with his single "Asleep Talking," a new EP and a spot opening for the Jonas Brothers.
It’s only been five years since Magnus Ferrell started to release music, and it was only five years before that he wrote his first song, at the age of 12, in attempts of getting a crush’s attention.
The 22-year-old is adjusting well to his breakout year, which has seen a hit single, “Asleep Talking,” a residency at the Blue Note in Los Angeles, opening first for Nick Jonas and now the Jonas Brothers, and the release of an EP.
“I’ve had a lot of social media growth, but these experiences in person have made me realize the social media stuff kind of doesn’t really mean that much to me,” Ferrell says. “Or it doesn’t mean as much as the in-person stuff because that was the first moment I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is the feeling I was searching for.’ It was just a relief and just super cool.”
It’s early October and Ferrell is sitting in Washington Square Park, nursing a coffee, and still trying to process making his late-night debut earlier in the week, on “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.”
“Fallon was pretty awesome. I had my whole family there and that was pretty emotional for me because I grew up going to see Fallon and I’ve been lucky enough to be around that studio.
