For his first independent New York show, Pham, who spent two years working in Dior’s New York embroidery atelier, is reworking runway hits, adding menswear and keeping his signature humor throughout.
Ten days before his Oct. 16 New York show, Bi Pham had three looks finished.
“For quite a few seasons now, for the different designers in New York, they give me two days or even the night before to make something for them,” Pham told WWD in an exclusive interview. “So I’m actually very used to that kind of pressure.”
If anything, working under his own name has raised the stakes. “I put even more pressure on me because it’s real life,” he said. “So, like, it has to look good.”
The result will be a collection of more than 15 looks that Pham is calling bridal, though his idea of the category stretches well past the bride. There are gowns, but also eveningwear, tailoring and three menswear looks, with the groom, wedding party, family and guests all considered part of the same fashion proposition.
It is also, intentionally, not much of a reset from what viewers just watched him do on “Project Runway.”
” Now, Pham is taking some of those ideas off television and putting them into a collection he actually has to sell.
