Furniture retailer Ikea is expanding its pre-owned marketplace to three new markets. It is launching in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Germany. This brings the total active markets to nine. It is also starting a buyback service in Portugal and Spain.
Ikea was named Europe’s best-performing cross-border seller by Cross-Border Commerce Europe earlier this year. In 2024, it started a pilot for a second-hand c2c marketplace in Spain and Norway. Since then, the pre-owned platform expanded to Portugal, Poland, Sweden and Belgium as well. Now, three new markets are added.
According to the company, the marketplace has received 15 million visits and generated 95,700 listings up to 31 August 2026. It has also resulted in 25.5 percent of the marketplace users becoming new or reactivated Ikea Family members (the company’s loyalty program). This is likely caused by the fact that members can add products to the marketplace for free.
In addition to the new market launches, the marketplace also wants to launch a Buyback option. With it, customers can sell products directly to Ikea. By the end of December this year, Ikea wants to start with a pilot in Portugal and Spain.
When customers receive an offer from Ikea, they can take the product to a store and complete the sale
When a customer lists an eligible product, they will have the option to receive an offer from Ikea as long as the item is listed. They can then choose if they want to sell it to another customer, or take the product to an Ikea store and complete the Buyback process.
