Eurojersey and Petratex are using a cycling capsule to showcase a joint approach to fabric and garment development.
Called Optical Motion, the project brings the Italian textile producer’s fabric research together with the Portuguese apparel manufacturer’s garment engineering under the concept “Engineered Together.” Materials, fit, construction and technologies are developed in relation to one another from the earliest stages of the project.
The partners see the capsule as a demonstration of a collaboration that could develop into a broader offering for apparel brands. Their announcement describes the potential as “a joint service capable of supporting brands from defining their performance objectives through to the development of the finished product.”
Cycling provides the starting point because of its demands on aerodynamics, ventilation, comfort and freedom of movement. The partners use different textile structures across the garment, selecting and positioning them according to the needs of the body and the activity.
Mesh is intended to improve ventilation, while structured surfaces are designed to support aerodynamics. High-density fabrics provide support and stability, with garment construction developed for comfort over longer distances, according to the companies.
Development begins with research into cycling’s performance requirements and moves through fabric selection, body mapping, garment design and 3D prototyping. The partners describe a process of testing and refinement that continues through performance validation and industrial production.
Petratex’s existing development capabilities include digital pattern refinement and visualization of fabrics, colors and prints.
