Stephanie Gottlieb and Movado Keep It in the Family

The jewelry designer joins forces with her cousin, Movado president Margot Grinberg, on a colorful, limited-edition take on the Museum Dial as the watchmaker’s women’s business surges.

“We couldn’t figure out how to draw you a family tree if we tried,” said Margot Grinberg, president of Movado, of her relationship with jewelry designer Stephanie Gottlieb. The third cousins come from a large Cuban family, with Grinberg remembering Gottlieb, a few years her senior, as the “cool older intimidating cousin.”

Now their paths are converging with the Stephanie Gottlieb x Movado collection, launching Tuesday. The limited-edition capsule refracts Gottlieb’s exuberant use of gemstones and saturated hues through one of watchmaking’s most distilled designs: Movado’s Museum Dial.

The idea began in Las Vegas more than a year ago, when Gottlieb visited Movado’s ballroom at JCK, saw a new Museum watch and imagined it in rainbow colors. On the flight home, she began assembling mock-ups and sent them to Grinberg. “I was like, ‘I don’t know if you guys were serious, but I’m serious,’” Gottlieb recalled.

The resulting capsule takes the Museum Velura as its base. A 25mm yellow-gold PVD model is ringed with a rainbow of gemstones, priced at $2,295. Limited editions pair turquoise, malachite, sodalite and pink jade dials with gemstone bezels, also at $2,295. Three smaller 21mm versions on colorful leather straps round out the collection at $795.

The spare geometry of the Museum Dial offered Gottlieb a familiar shape, one she likened to her signature Candy Button design.

“I think the tension is what made this watch work so beautifully,” Gottlieb said.
