The exhibition dedicated to sneakers will be on display at the museum in Prato, Italy, until May 2 and features 100 models.
Museo del Tessuto, together with the independent Milan-based creative production company Beside Arts and Publishing, unveiled on Thursday its first exhibition dedicated to sneakers: “Sneaker Revolution.”
On display until May 2, the exhibition at the museum in Prato, around 12 miles from Florence, explores the role of sneakers as an influential cultural phenomenon in sports, music, fashion, design, politics and economy. Starting from its origins as a technical sports shoe, the exhibit traces the sneaker’s evolution into a cult object for collectors, its technological innovation and how it became one of the most influential products in fashion.
“’Sneaker Revolution’ is a tribute to an iconic accessory of contemporary dress, and a gesture of attention toward it,” said Fabia Romagnoli, president of the museum’s foundation. “We wish to dedicate it in particular to the younger generations, inviting them to discover how many stories and meanings can lie behind the seemingly banal act of putting on a shoe that has defined our time.”
The 100 models on display include brands such as Converse, Diadora, Fila, Golden Goose, New Balance, Nike, On, Onitsuka Tiger, Reebok and Vans.
They came from the the museum’s own collection; the collections of two prominent sneaker collectors, Marco Colombo and Matteo Ficci; the traveling museum “Back to the Future” inspired by the namesake film, and private collections, as well as from the archives of lending brands such as Adidas, Balenciaga, Gucci , Hogan, Tod’s, Prada and Superga.
