80% of marketplace GMV in Europe come from cross-border transactions

The 100 biggest marketplaces that are active in Europe are expected to generate a gross merchandise volume (GMV) of 175.8 billion euros. And 79.5 percent of that is generated by cross-border sales.  The cross-border market share is expected to increase.

This is according to the seventh edition of the report “Top 100 Cross-Border Marketplaces Europe,” published by Cross-Border Commerce Europe. According to the study, these marketplaces will generate 139.8 billion euros in cross-border sales by 2026. This represents nearly 80 percent of total GMV.

The total GMV of the top 100 marketplaces is expected to grow by approximately 8 percent next year, reaching about 190 billion euros. Cross-border GMV is expected to rise by 10 percent, to 154 billion euros. This means that 81 percent of total GMV will then come from cross-border sales.

According to the researchers, Amazon, Temu, and AliExpress top the list of the top 100. This ranking is based on their cross-border sales, SEO results, geographic coverage, and website traffic.

AI-driven product discovery and social commerce are currently changing the way consumers find products, while regulations are adding an extra layer of complexity. International platforms are increasingly investing in European infrastructure and local fulfillment, ensuring that competition in Europe remains fierce.
