Zurich-based Timber Carbon has launched what is said to be the first AI-powered infrastructure for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in the building sector.
With this tool, the CO2 locked in a building becomes a tradable asset, connecting the emissions-heavy building sector directly to carbon markets.
The AI infrastructure tracks the long-term carbon storage of biobased building materials, supporting the decarbonization of the real estate industry.
To date, Timber Carbon has put together the world’s largest portfolio of bio-based CDR in the building sector, which includes over 90 buildings that lock in a combined volume of 72,000 tonnes of CO2.
The launch of the AI-powered offering is accompanied by the announcement of Timber Carbon’s first funding round, envisioned to run in Q4 2026.
The building sector accounts for roughly 36% of global carbon dioxide emissions, a third of which come from building materials. As climate change mitigation efforts around the world pick up pace, a number of countries are already shaping regulations to curb the CO2 impact of building materials.
Against this backdrop, Timber Carbon points out that bio-based building materials stand out as the obvious choice, especially timber from sustainably managed forests, with its high climate performance. The company’s new AI infrastructure makes the adoption of these building materials both climate-forward and economically attractive.

Timber Carbon says that putting a value on built-in timber’s climate performance is intended to double the share of bio-based new builds among investment properties within ten years, depending on the country.
