Skytree has entered into a strategic partnership with Galetech Energy Developments and Mwahera Green Hydrogen, embarking on a collaboration that will integrate direct air capture (DAC) technology at the Mwangea e-fuels project in Kenya.
Under the partnership, the DAC technology deployed at this site will capture atmospheric CO2 that will then be combined with green hydrogen to produce carbon-neutral e-fuels.
The project is being launched with an initial deployment phase that will be followed by a technical and commercial performance verification before the initiative scales.
According to the developers, once scaled, the project will be able to capture up to tens of kilotonnes of atmospheric carbon dioxide per year.
By producing e-fuels, the partnering companies will offer a decarbonization solution for heavy transport industries such as aviation, maritime, and long-haul shipping.
This collaboration is designed to address two major challenges in the production of sustainable e-fuels.
On one hand, by capturing CO2 directly from ambient air rather than relying on industrial point-source emissions, the project will create a circular carbon loop, where burning the final e-fuel product does not release any new CO2 into the atmosphere.
On the other hand, it will utilize Kenya’s abundant renewable energy, which represents 80% of the country’s grid, powering operations with energy from geothermal, solar, wind, and hydro solutions.
