Mozambique entrusts small solar panel factory to UAE’s Jampur Group

United Arab Emirates-based Jampur Group has been selected to take over the management and modernization of the Beluluane Solar Panel Factory, located in Boane district, in Mozambique’s Maputo province.

The agreement follows a restructuring initiative launched by the country’s Energy Fund (FUNAE) in 2024, aimed at improving the facility’s operational efficiency, addressing technological limitations and strengthening its competitiveness in domestic and regional markets.

Maputo provincial governor Manuel Tule urged Jampur Group to prioritize the recruitment of young people from surrounding communities. However, he acknowledged that the introduction of advanced manufacturing technologies would require specialized skills that may not yet be widely available among local jobseekers.

The factory was inaugurated in November 2013 following an investment of approximately $13 million, financed through Indian cooperation, and had an initial annual production capacity of 5 MW. As Mozambique’s first solar panel assembly plant, it was established to supply equipment for rural electrification projects, including those serving villages, schools and healthcare facilities.

Production was suspended around 2022 as the facility struggled to compete with cheaper imported solar panels and rapidly advancing technologies. Its outdated equipment limited production to panels rated at approximately 270 W, while newer products available on the market offered significantly higher power outputs, further undermining the factory’s competitiveness.

According to figures from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Mozambique’s cumulative installed solar capacity stood at 175 MW at the end of 2025, unchanged from the previous year.
