First European Credits Under Gold Standard’s Soil Organic CO2 Framework Methodology Now Available On The Market

South Pole, Gaïago, and Gold Standard have issued the first carbon credits from the European Soil Revitalization Program.

As a global first for climate finance, this program is the inaugural project worldwide to be design-certified and issue carbon credits under Gold Standard’s Soil Organic Carbon Framework Methodology.

Implemented and operated on the ground by agtech Gaïago, the European Soil Revitalization Program helps farmers adopt regenerative practices while also enabling carbon removal.

Launched in 2022, the program generated the novel credits from the first 6,000 verified hectares of project land across France and Belgium.

In the future, the program has the ambition to grow to a coverage of over 39,282 hectares with a network of 727 participating farms, expecting to remove 264,174 tCO₂e over its first crediting period.

Since the beginning of this initiative, South Pole has taken the role of a carbon asset development partner for Gaïago, leading the European Soil Revitalization Program development and the verification processes required for Gold Standard certification.

The milestone credit issuance offers corporate net-zero-oriented buyers access to high-quality, scientifically verified carbon removal credits generated through the land-use sector.

According to the project developers, the issued credits align with the Science Based Targets initiative’s (SBTi) new Ongoing Emissions Responsibility (OER) recognition scheme.

To track results and progress, the project uses the UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) GSOC MRV protocol and aligns directly with the FAO RECSOIL Initiative. To date, 1,972 local stakeholders taking part in this program have already been trained on soil health.
