Danish TSO proposes limited grid access scheme

Denmark’s national transmission system operator (TSO) Energinet is proposing two new products offering permanent limited grid access to electricity producers.

The products are designed to limit production in order to accommodate transmission grid capacity, the TSO explains, with one intended for transmission grid producers and the other for distribution grid producers.

Energinet says the basic principle of the two products is that a producer would accept that their feed-in to the grid may be limited when there is insufficient capacity in the grid. In return, a producer is exempt from the connection fee that is normally payable when connecting to full grid access.

“By entering into an agreement on limited grid access, flexible systems can also demonstrate their grid friendliness,” the TSO’s explanation continues. “In this way, they achieve higher priority in the pooled case processing and thus also the opportunity to potentially be connected to the electricity grid more quickly.”

Energinet says the solutions may be relevant for different types of production plants that can act flexibly in their feed-in to the electricity grid, such as solar and wind power plants, as well as battery systems in the feed-in direction.

A consultation on the two products is open until November 13, with Energinet inviting relevant actors and other stakeholders to provide input. The TSO says responses will support further work on the methods. A webinar will take place on November 6 as part of the consultation, giving stakeholders the chance to ask questions on the solutions.

“The two products for producers that we are now sending out for consultation are important pieces in the overall puzzle that should give all players equal opportunities to demonstrate their grid friendliness and thus move forward in the queue to get on the electricity grid,” commented Kia Marie Jerichau, Energinet’s VP of Business and Markets.
