BYD’s big story in the last year or tear and a half has been its rapid growth outside of China. The Chinese electric vehicle company has been selling more and more cars in other countries — across Europe, South America, other parts of Asia, Australia, and Africa (basically, everywhere except North America). One of its big hubs and markets is now the gigantic market of Brazil, and things seem to be going well.
According to reporting out of Brazil, BYD is now aiming to double its annual vehicle production capacity at its factory in Brazil. Stamping, welding, and paint facilities are nearing completion of the initial plans, and now the company is aiming for a production capacity of 600,000 vehicles a year. (That’s a lot.)
According to Reuters, “BYD’s Brazil unit is on track to locally source more than 50% of its components, looking to exceed the required minimum as it enters 2027, which will satisfy regulatory demands and help it begin regional exports, Senior Vice President Alexandre Baldy said in an interview.” The company is apparently keen on being seen as a local automobile producer in Brazil. “Local industry groups have complained that BYD, which opened its newest plant in South America’s largest car market a year ago, relied on imports and temporarily low tariffs.” BYD is intent on changing the narrative (and the reality) in the 7th most populated country in the world.
BYD aims to become the top selling automaker in Brazil by 2030. That’s quite a noteworthy goal!
