Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) is expanding its carbon-inset program into aviation, offering businesses certificates linked to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as companies seek ways to address emissions from corporate travel and air freight.
The new offering is available through Amazon’s Sustainability Exchange, which provides carbon credits and related resources to eligible companies. The platform will now offer SAF certificates to suppliers, business customers and signatories of The Climate Pledge.
“At Amazon, we’ve been buying SAF certificates for our own flights – and now we can offer them to others, too,” Kyle Kornack, responsible for carbon markets at Amazon, said Thursday on LinkedIn.
Aviation accounts for about 2.5% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, according to Kornack. SAF, which can be made from waste fats and oils, remains a small part of the market: it represents less than 1% of jet fuel supply and costs two to five times as much as conventional fuel, he said.
The certificates separate the verified environmental benefit of physical SAF from its delivery to a particular aircraft. That allows companies to invest in lower-carbon aviation fuel even when the fuel itself cannot be supplied to their own flights.
Amazon’s purchasing volume helps it secure more favorable pricing, with savings passed on to its value chain and Climate Pledge signatories. The approach is intended to make verified emissions reductions more accessible to companies seeking to address travel and freight emissions.
