Instagram launches Edits for Mac with multi-track video editing and 4K exports

Instagram users can now download a Mac version of Edits, the company’s free video editing app, with multi-track editing, advanced color grading tools, direct publishing to Instagram, and 4K exports. Here are the details.

Instagram is launching Edits on desktop today, bringing its free video editing app to Mac with a larger workspace, more precise editing controls, and customizable keyboard shortcuts that can match those of other video editors.

Like Edits on mobile, Instagram says its desktop counterpart will receive weekly updates and is asking users for feedback to help shape future improvements.

A lot of creators have described the same moment to us: a project gets too big for your phone. You’ve got a dozen clips going, you’re trying to land a cut on the exact beat, and your thumb covers the part of the timeline you need to see. Your work is growing, and your tools should grow with it. We’re expanding Edits to take on your most ambitious projects on desktop.

One particularly interesting feature of the new desktop app is the ability to publish videos directly to Instagram, with support for native features such as tagging, location, and trial reels.

Instagram adds that it is expanding Edits to support “multiple aspect ratios (horizontal and vertical), with 4K watermark-free export, so you can easily share to any platform, or use Edits for personal projects.”

As for the actual editing tools, Edits for desktop makes basic operations like splitting, cutting, and trimming videos easier, while also offering a full multi-track timeline, keyframes for transitions, precise audio waveforms, and advanced color grading tools such as color wheels, curves, and log conversions.
