Chainalysis says Sub-Saharan Africa's crypto economy grew 13.4% to $101 billion, led by South Africa, Nigeria and stablecoin use.
Sub-Saharan Africa was the fastest-growing crypto region in the latest Chainalysis review, even as it remained the smallest by total value. The report, published Oct. 29, 2026, said the region's crypto economy rose 13.4% to $101 billion between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026, driven by practical uses such as cross-border payments, remittances, everyday transfers and access to dollar-linked value.
Chainalysis said South Africa and Nigeria together accounted for more than three-quarters of Sub-Saharan Africa's crypto activity, but the two markets followed different paths. South Africa's crypto economy grew 52% to $39.3 billion, with gains across every category measured, led by cross-border peer-to-peer stablecoin flows and service flows. Nigeria recorded $38.1 billion in activity, a 3% decline overall, as growth in centralized exchange and service activity was offset by a 45% drop in decentralized exchange activity and a 17% fall in cross-border P2P flows.
The report said South Africa's business-like payments also expanded sharply. It estimated $8.34 billion in domestic business-like transactions in the period, while South Africa's institutional crypto sector received $1.29 billion in inflows. Chainalysis said this pattern supports South Africa's role as a regional hub for crypto-related trade and capital movement.
3% of the value received across Sub-Saharan Africa, the highest share globally, suggesting that self-custody remains central to regional adoption. 7%.
