China’s STAR50 lost nearly 40% from July 9 to Oct. 26 while Bitcoin gained 27%. Funding pressure is the next contagion test.
China's STAR50, an index of 50 companies on Shanghai's technology board, ended Oct. 26, 2026, almost 40% below its July closing peak. Reuters put the accompanying loss in market value at roughly $480 billion. Over the same July 9–Oct. 26 calendar dates, Bitcoin gained 26.6%.
For crypto investors, the test is whether China's selloff develops into broader funding pressure that reaches Bitcoin. Falling equities can trigger financing pressure and forced selling across markets.
Tencent's closing series places STAR50 at 2,185.83 on July 9 and 1,315.5 on Oct. 26, a 39.8169% loss across 71 subsequent Chinese trading sessions. These are index levels, not a calculation of the $480 billion figure, which remains Reuters' estimate of market-value erosion.
STAR50 represents large, liquid securities on the technology board. Its decline measures equity repricing, rather than the performance of China's entire AI industry.
CryptoSlate compared that endpoint loss with every overlapping 71-session return in Yahoo Finance's US index histories through Oct. 26:
The loss sits deep in the downside tail even against chip stocks, an additional technology-sector comparison. But overlapping windows share observations and cluster around crises. These frequencies describe the historical sample; they are not independent crash probabilities.
The calculation compares starting and ending closes over equal trading-session intervals. It does not compare the deepest fall inside each window or equate a four-month move with a full, multiyear bear market.
