Why services could be India’s biggest win in the Canada trade deal
While the treatment Canada offers every country, its preferential trade partners get considerably more than that. This is what India can use as a bargaining point, writes Prof. Sugandha C Huria and Prof. Aishwarya Harichandan.
“Canada is ready to be the reliable partner India needs,” trade minister Maninder Sidhu said last week, as he wrapped up the largest Canadian trade mission to India in three decades. Nearly 300 delegates signed 34 commercial agreements worth about C$300 million, and both governments say the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) is on track to be concluded this year. Most commentary on the deal has been about goods. For Indian firms that sell services to Canada, reliability means something narrower and more practical: being able to move people and data across the border on terms that do not change every year.
