Why operational excellence will define the next phase of India’s startup growth

Growth rarely announces itself. It arrives as a signed term sheet on a Friday evening, a large client wanting to go live in three weeks, or an investor doubling a commitment.

But the win is rarely the hard part. The hard part is the Monday after.

That Monday tells you whether you have built a company or simply had a good quarter.

In most startups, operations sit in the back seat. It is the team that asks for approvals, slows down contracts, and says “not yet” when sales say “yes”. Founders tolerate it the way one tolerates a seatbelt.

I have never accepted that framing. Bain & Company’s long-running research on growth found that 85% of the barriers to profitable growth are internal, with revenue outgrowing talent at the top of the list. Companies rarely lose to the market. They lose to their own machinery, and that machinery is operations.

Early on, operations feel optional. A small team, a founder who knows everything, a spreadsheet that works. Why design controls for a business that fits in one room?

Because by the time you feel the need, you are already late. Operations built in the middle of a growth spurt is built under pressure: rushed hires, patched processes, controls bolted on after something breaks. Worse, it takes bandwidth from growth itself. The team that should be closing the next client is busy repairing the last one. You slow down precisely when you meant to accelerate.
