WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that allows users to invite people to join voice and video calls even if they do not have a WhatsApp account.
The feature, called guest calling, lets users share a call link with anyone they want to speak to, without asking them to download the app or create an account.
The company said guest calls will be free and end-to-end encrypted, with no time limit. The feature could be useful for people who need to connect with colleagues, classmates, teachers or others who do not use WhatsApp.
To start a guest call, WhatsApp users need to open the Calls tab in the app and tap the '+' icon. They can then create a call link and share it with the people they want to invite.
People who receive the link can open it in a web browser on their computer, enter their name and request to join the call. They do not need a WhatsApp account to take part. However, only people with a WhatsApp account can create call links. The person who creates the link acts as the host and must approve guests before they can join the conversation.
WhatsApp will place guests in a waiting room until the host allows them into the call. The host can also remove a guest at any time. The feature supports both one-to-one conversations and group calls with up to 32 participants.
Guests will have access to several basic calling features. They can share their computer screen to discuss documents, presentations or other material during a conversation.
