‘The Prestige’ Re-Release Is Coming to IMAX

Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige is returning to theaters for its 20th birthday, and that includes premium formats.

Thanks to Variety, we know that IMAX and 70mm screenings will be part of the occasion. In a statement, the filmmaker said he was “very excited” for The Prestige to return to cinemas and audiences “[getting] the chance to see it on 70mm and IMAX for the first time.”

While the success of The Odyssey definitely played a hand in this revival, credit also goes to fellow Nolan movies Interstellar and Tenet. Both those movies also came back to the big screen in recent years, and also with IMAX and 70mm to help get butts in seats.

Released post-Batman Begins in 2006, The Prestige is an adaptation of Christopher Priest’s 1985 novel. In the film, Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale are rival stage magicians racing to create the perfect teleportation illusion. Like many of Nolan’s other films, it was well-regarded by critics and audiences. It went on to earn Oscar nominations for art direction and cinematography.

The Prestige is considered to have the first-ever IMAX 70mm shot used for a narrative-length film. Nolan used IMAX cameras for a scene with Bale’s duplicated character, both to test if IMAX could be reduced to 35mm film and to test what he wanted to do in The Dark Knight. That makes for a full circle moment, which audiences will see for themselves when the re-release comes to theaters on January 29, 2027.
