Earlier this month, Paramount announced its plan to adapt CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 into a movie. Given the game’s already a franchise with a returning anime spinoff, some wondered what exactly that meant. Would we be getting a hard canon version of the original game in two-hour format, or something more like Edgerunners that widens the universe?
It seems the latter’s in the cards, at least according to CDPR’s co-CEO Michał Nowakowski. While talking to Polish outlet PAP Biznes, he specifically stated the plan was to “definitely…not make a film adaptation of the game. We want to tell a story in the world of Cyberpunk, but it won’t be a one-to-one game story.”
That’s good to hear, and not just because it avoids any canon arguments that arise when tackling RPGs for film and TV. Even when Cyberpunk 2077 was broken, players really took to its setting, which likely helped explain why Edgerunners was such a success. In fact, Nowakowski specifically cited this in relation to next week’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II. Trigger’s first anime renewed interest in the game, leading to increased sales for months and years on end, something the studio hopes continues with this new series.
“These types of events have two effects—we activate existing players and attract new audiences,” he said. ” CDPR’s strategy isn’t dissimilar from how other games have been moving when adapted, and The Witcher has been equally lucky. All this means is that whenever the Cyberpunk 2077 movie rolls around, it won’t have to work too hard to drum up interest.
