Sony revives the Walkman’s iconic MDR-3 headphones with USB-C for $60

Sony is bringing back its iconic Walkman MDR-3 headphones for the modern era with a USB-C connection and a price tag of $60.

Originally launched in 1979, Sony’s MDR-3 headphone lineup served as a companion to the Walkman cassette player and, now, they’re making a comeback. The Sony MDR-3R headphones are a USB-C revival of the classic design, just with connectivity that actually works on modern devices.

The design, Sony says, is a “faithful recreation” of the original and comes with blue or orange ear pads. Even the packaging and included manual “inherit the design of the original model.” As for the actual sound quality, Sony has “re-engineered” the same 23mm driver with sound “close to the original,” though refined for modern sound.

Along with the USB-C connection, they also feature a microphone and in-line remote, and Sony incorporated recycled plastic too.

Celebrating the Walkman’s role in Netflix’s Stranger Things, Sony is also releasing a red/black variant to match the ones worn by Max in the show. Those will cost $79.99.
